In 1994,
the North American Free Trade
Agreement (NAFTA) was adopted by
Canada, the U.S. and Mexico to open
up the borders for free trade. This
trading bloc was to bring economic
growth and new jobs.
Fourteen years later, Canada is in
worse shape and in need of change.
With
our borders open to the highest
bidder, corporations have swooped
in, forcing smaller businesses out.
Jobs have been shipped overseas,
while the new jobs created are
mostly part-time, insecure and with
few benefits. Canadian productivity
has increased, but wages are lagging
behind. Corporations are prospering
at the expense of the average
worker. It's
time to take back our nation.
In
order to stay in the competition,
the government has cut spending for
social programmes such as Employment
Insurance, Old Age Security and
federal transfers to health and
education. At the same time, the
number of U.S. acquisitions of
Canadian firms has more than quadrupled
since NAFTA came into
effect.
Economic
growth is meaningless if citizens'
well-being is neglected. Tell
Prime Minister Stephen Harper to put
Canadians before corporations by
reforming NAFTA >>

Integrate This! is
about challenging the Security
and Prosperity Partnership of
North America (SPP), an
executive-level pact between the
governments and corporate
sectors of Canada, the United
States and Mexico, which has
never been debated publicly or
voted on in any of the three
countries. There are over 300
initiatives in the SPP aimed at
harmonizing North American
policies on food, drugs,
security, immigration, refugees,
manufacturing, the environment
and public health.
